Lafayette’s Percussion Ensemble connected remotely to continue rehearsals throughout the fall semester, which meant students collaborated far from campus—from Idaho, California, Hawaii, and even India.

The video below showcases the group’s performance of Steve Reich’s minimalist composition, “Clapping Music.” It required students to study the parts in group rehearsals, and then each member needed to record themself individually. The separate parts were synced by fellow percussionist Jordan Leiber ’22.

The group, which is under the direction of Larry Stockton, professor of music, is an example of how faculty and students have found ways to work collaboratively, demonstrate resourcefulness, and nurture creativity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ensemble will include this recording with others in a YouTube presentation Nov. 16. (Learn more and register to watch.)
